Beyond Maternity

Today is the very last day we are selling consigned maternity clothing. After years of "meh" maternity sales we are saying Goodbye to the clothing.

Thank you for your patronage over the years for these items. Some of you got entire wardrobes, some never found quite the right piece to purchase. Moms know how quickly bodies change during pregnancy and that each pregnancy you can carry different, or you may be pregnant in a different season, and have different occasions calling for a wide variety of clothing styles.

We've had some great pieces come through! Those which were not purchased have been donated to local charities, gratefully received by each community and those in need.

What can you do from this point forward with your maternity clothing? We will continue to accept donations on behalf of charities and people in need. There are some resellers local and online who may help you sell pieces or you can pass things along to friends. There's always a way to keep things moving forward!

We will continue to resell items for families, babies, kids & teens. Those new babies can be clothed, wrapped, and play with our goodies. Babies grow to toddlers who want books, toys, games and new clothes to grow into. Bedding as beds change (or need to be frequently changed), strollers and carriers for walks, new ways to eat. Heading to school bundled in warmth and looking great, shoes replace worn out and outgrown styles, furniture for big changes. Try out for sports or dance, find costumes for fun, fancy and dress down for preemies to teens and in-between.

We are a store with variety, quality, experience and a smile for everyone. Come in and see how we are moving beyond maternity into a bright future!

Buy the Book

...or borrow from the library, trade, etc. Do what you need to read!

Timely article...

NPR Reading Helps Disadvantaged Kids Catch Up

My youngest son and I spend at least 45 minutes in The Book Place (Novato) yesterday. I searched for books by David Eddings for my son's dad (his dad and I loved this author in our younger years and now he's reading them to our kids) and some sci-fi/mystery and other interesting books for myself. For the kids more along the same lines plus chapter books with good stories about doing good things. Often I am drawn toward award winning titles such as those honored by Newbery and other foundations.

Our store resells books and currently the best-selling are for the youngest kids. GREAT! Put books into tiny hands, read to them, share with them your favorites and bring new stories into their lives. Use books for teaching facts (Ew Yuck! is a fun one), for passing time, for sharing experiences, and more. Our story books, beginning readers and chapter books are getting more attention.

The free Book Exchange Box in our lobby has been popular for quite a while now and we intend to keep it going. Have books? Leave them. Want books? Take some. These books may have more wear than others but they are ready for new owners.

Have books that are torn or overly worn? Try reusing them in art projects, make a whole new book by combing multiple others, create wall art, stationary, mod podge decor and more. Sometimes a simple sentence or picture can help you recall an entire story.

One of my favorite books from childhood is The Country Bunny And The Little Gold Shoes. I can't tell you exactly why. I can tell you that after I had kids I HAD to get this book! Each time one of my youthful favorites comes into the store I get excited all over again.

Holding a book in your hand, turning pages can be a simple yet magical journey. This morning my son wouldn't leave the house without a book he started last night. That made me smile because I know that I've done a good job connecting my kids to good reads.

Have I tried an electronic reading system? Not yet. I suppose I will in time. For now I don't feel "old fashioned" in maintaining a personal library, in donating, reselling and re-buying books. It feels as right to me now as it did when I had my own first books (which my mom says we made her read over and over and over....)

Have a favorite book for babies, kids, teens, parenting? Please share and maybe someone else will buy the book!

Grandparents (SALE) Day

Today is our monthly sale day for Grandparents,
they'll get 50% most everything in the store TODAY!

I only knew one set of grandparents, the others passed before I was born. My grandpa was a boxer, had three girls and I was his first grandchild. Even so, he tried to show me and my cousins how to box, golf, and be strong. My grandma was a fashionista who loved to host family gatherings (but not cooking!) and I lived with her for a while in my early 20s; I loved her so much and gratefully she was able to meet my first son.

Many of today's grandparents are active and involved in the care of their grandkids. Some are even full-time guardians. They have worked longer, lived more than we parents of today and have much to give. Our store gets plenty of grandparents bringing in their grandchildren or buying for them. With pride they show off  little babies, toddlers and older kids. I listen to stories, look at pictures, laugh or offer sympathies for certain situations.

This is a day for Marin Kids Consignment to give a little back to these wonderful people. Our consignors bring in such wonderful items, some of which confuse grandparents (smile) and some bring back memories. Thanks to our wonderful community we keep on sharing what needs to keep going forward, generation after generation!

- Stephanie (who made grandparents out of her own parents for the first time 18 years ago!)

Be bright

A small survey on Facebook showed that respondents preferred OxyClean as a stain remover for clothing. I have also heard that Resolve spot cleaner, bleach pens work. I like to use Borax and Netapur bar by H20 Natural Cleaning Products. Hanging to dry and spot cleaning can also help lengthen the life of items.

Some items with spots do make it to the racks. If the item is unique, if the spot does not ruin the look of the item and seems to be removable, if the spot is on an item that is popular (rain coats, pajamas) then these items will still be entered at a lowered price. However, we would prefer to not have to present any stains.

How can you help? Treat your laundry immediately or with one of the cleansers mentioned above. Definitely wash each item (yes, I have seen food still on clothing brought in) and remember to bring in only what you yourself would buy. Have you ever spent money on someone else's dirty laundry? Don't think so!

Donation items also should be laundered and preferably stain-free, working buttons and zippers, no holes. Families in need who receive items via our store should not be given something that's ready for the garbage or recycling (single materials can  be recycled, multiple materials within one piece cannot.) Each agency and recipient is incredibly grateful for your generosity.

If you find the need to remove tags note that your item may not be available for resale. In order to check for recalls we require brand and manufacturer names, model numbers, material type, etc. It is ILLEGAL to resell and you cannot donate recalled items and we don't want any spots on our record ;-)

There are many ways to shine and we hope you find us BRIGHT!!

First Timers Focus

For first time parents, a little light reading. By the way, you'll never actually be prepared to be a parent and that's ok because it's all in the experience. I've been a parent for over 18 years and I continue to learn on a daily basis. Some of the financial advice makes sense but I've been raising 3 without a $10k savings, while it would have been nice there are ways to successfully get through parenting without a stockpile of money. Enjoy your individual experience! - Stephanie

"9 Expert Tips for Preparing for a Baby
Kimberly Palmer, author of Generation Earn: The Young Professional’ s Guide to Spending, Investing, and Giving Back and the Alpha Consumer blog at shares nine more tips for preparing for a baby.
Thinking about becoming a parent? Most of that decision has nothing to do with money, but getting financially prepared can make welcoming a newborn into your home a little less stressful. You’ll still have to learn how to cope with sleep deprivation and diapers, but can worry a little less about affording it all.
The Waiting Game – Wait until after the birth to purchase toys and gadgets (such as an Exersaucer or Jumperoo) that aren’t usually used until babies move past the newborn phase. You might find that your baby likes only certain kinds of toys, or doesn’t like to be constricted in certain contraptions. By waiting, you’ll be sure to only buy things that you actually use.
Friends and Family Plan – Borrow as much as possible from other parents, including used maternity clothes and baby gear. Your friends might be glad to put their items to good use, and you can pass on the favor when you’ re all done. (Resale stores rock!)
Just make sure the product hasn’t been recalled. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled a slew of products recently, from sleep positioners to cribs to infant slings. In fact, the commission recommends against using drop-side cribs altogether, so spring for new purchases whenever safety is a concern.
Community Trust - Sign up for your local community email group through or use to pick up used items from other parents in your area. Tips for finding discounts can also be found at (ahem - Resale stores rock!!)
Work Affects – Familiarize yourself with your workplace’s maternity and paternity leave policies. Some people are shocked to discover than instead of the two-month paid leave they had planned, they’ ll be forced to take unpaid leave. Federal law doesn’t require employers to provide any paid leave at all.
Health Matters – Find out what it would cost to add an additional dependent to your health insurance. You might need to plan ahead to afford those extra payments.
The 10K Mark – Before the baby arrives, save at least $10,000 for baby-related expenses during the first year. It sounds like a lot, but can make it easier to absorb all those extra costs.
Practice Makes Perfect – Practice living on $1,000 less each month, which is the average cost of child care. Or, if either you or your spouse plans to stay home, practice living without that second income.
Think Big (or Not) – Anticipate any major purchases, such as a new home or new car, that you will need to make before welcoming home a new member of the family. But don’ t feel pressured to live in a bigger home; plenty of families turn small apartments into a cozy and welcoming family spaces.
Where There’s a Will – Update (or create) your will and life insurance benefits. It’s no fun to talk about, but important to guarantee the financial security of your family. Check out these other money moves to make when you have a baby.

Final Thoughts

Remember, you have 9 months to prepare for your new bundle of joy. Don’t worry if you didn’t start early enough. Focus on becoming financially fit from this point forward. Take the time, do the work, and reap the benefits of financial preparation."
