Don't be sad

Don't be sad we're closing next Sunday. Marin Kids Consignment has had a great run!

It all started just about 4.5 years ago with an idea that lead to some part-time sales which lead to a store and then a spot in the community.

Many thanks go to Melissa for having the gumption to get it started. Her idea of recycling kids items was not a new one but it was important enough to her that she created her own way to make it happen for so many.

I had no idea that being in the store would come to mean so much to me, as well. Connecting with neighbors and friends but also with families from near and distant cities, the store has become an outlet of conversation, story sharing, and most importantly, support.

The charitable aspects of the store have grown from a piece here and there to bags full of items and large gear, each piece appreciated by non-profits and families in need. Every week I learned about new outlets receiving donations and ways to help. Thankfully our consignors have been of the same mind and so the community came together in a variety of different ways.

I have learned so much about myself along the way. This store has lead me to a personal level to commitment to others, to business, and to myself that I never realized was available to me.

Thank you for having been a part of what the store had become. I've had a blast!!

Don't be sad. Be happy for what we did together and keep looking forward.

All my best - Stephanie

Good old Wiki - "Consignment shop" is an American term for those second-hand shops that sell used goods for owners (consignors), typically at a lower cost than new.

This is what we do!

Sometimes we are mistaken for a buy-up-front service or a place to anonymously leave junk. Oops! That's not us. We understand that some businesses do buy up-front (most I know of are in San Francisco or elsewhere in the country) and that can be a good way to make quick money but at a very low purchase price. We are not a Donation Drop Off Spot like a Goodwill truck or even a junk yard. While we do produce donations and accept for specific charities, that is only done in person with advance notice. Leaving items outside or in the lobby without speaking to us first is not allowed! We believe in safety first and we must know the history of items and check for recalls so please do not consider us a catch-all for any and everything you simply want to get ride of.

Will consigning your items with us make you money? It may but there is no sales guarantee for any item consigned with us. We do try our best to try to sell each piece but sometimes even the cutest, newest, cheapest items are taken off the floor in time and donated. I wish I could predict sales but instead I must rely on customer feedback, our Wish List, trends and even personal perception in order to accept items. We sure hope items sell for you! Will you make a ton of money with us, quickly? Probably not but such is this business, we are about time. I give items a longer turn on our floor than other shops as we have such a variety of different customers coming at all times and they all deserve to see what we offer. As it is, we often have overflow of items to donate and continually search out non-profits to accept what we have to give.

What sells best? When will items sell? What will items sell for? Sorry, that's up to whim of the customers. They are a fun bunch who enjoy browsing and I love giving my own advice as a mom of three. I will ask  questions to see if we have a good fit for your shopping needs and gladly walk you around the store showing it all off. But I never hard sell, that is if you aren't sure or aren't in need I won't say you have to have anything. We are here to sell items but not contribute to further excesses.

We are getting more and more customers buying items as gifts and that's wonderful! We all know the excesses of today's world and it's gratifying to see when what we offer (through our consignors) will have a new life, be "new" to someone else.

We want our consignors to shop us first with their store credit. We want you, your friends, neighbors, other family members to try us first when shopping for kids (Preemie to Teen!). We want to keep helping our community at large with donations and assistance. We want to keep on keeping on as do the items we carry!!

Consignment (and more). It's what we do!

I came across a wonderful set of tag lines from a new to me FB page, The Jelly Bean Trail :

"Be Your Best. Love Your Life. Do What Matters."

This immediately struck me as a great way to do every day - if one wanders around aimlessly whether physically or mentally, then what is it that is being accomplished?

I try to make something special out of every day. I have learned to say Thank You more. When I look around me I can see beauty in the smallest details and appreciate having caught the vision. While I am still working on asking for help I offer it without hesitation whenever possible. When customers have an insight into all I have to do they will give condolences, encouragement, appreciation or "better you than me". I always respond with a joyous "I love what I do!"

Lisa Klein of Loved Twice  loves doing her charity work and has spread that joy to others across the country who are joining her efforts. Today we offer a special sale to help raise funds offering HALF OFF all the fabulous new items LT sells through us!! I get to do my work, customers get to buy new items, and babies in need get items from Loved Twice. What an amazing partnership we all have!

When I was a single mom of a young son (he's now 18, graduated, capable, loving, handsome, smart.....too much? LOL) I signed us up to buy gifts for a family in need for the holidays. I wanted to show him that others have less than we did, which wasn't a lot, and that no matter what there are ways to give.

Later, when my third and youngest child was a toddler, I would take him to visit disabled and older folks. What a joy to share a child's energy and loving manner, even cute tantrums, with those who may not get that type of interaction regularly.

I'm not rich now, far from it. But I give the same way, as much as I can in ways that I can. I don't guilt myself when I can't help but reward myself with thoughts of all I have done and will do. This is what matters to me. This is what I do.

I am always interested in how others help, what charities are doing, and who else should know. If you don't know, find out and then tell me!

Support a Reader

No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance.
- Confucius

Our store is helping to sell bracelets which say "I (heart) to Read" for a young girl in our community (below), an avid reader who has impaired vision. Before her full diagnosis she somehow compensated for vision loss and devoured books of all kinds but it wasn't easy for her.

The bracelets are $3 each, in adult and children's sizes. The money will help her family to buy an electronic tablet so that she may continue her love of reading with magnification assistance.

Please consider this purchase when you come into our store in the near future. Thank you!

"I LOVE to read!"

Thankful for This Little Piggy Thursday

Today we once again host This Little Piggy! It's exciting for me to share in a new(ish) and growing business with another local mom who attended Women's Initiative. Shawna and I are both excited about what we do and love sharing our talents with customers.

Shawna's design line has expanded and her creativity has exploded; beautiful, professional painting and firing of fine china clay with the precious prints from babies, children, adults, even pooches.

It's wonderful to combine efforts and work with local families and children. Both of our businesses are a source of pride!

Please come by today, 11a - 3p to see Shawna before she heads off for vacation for a few weeks.

You will be amazed at what she can do and you will be so happy to have beautiful plaques or picture frames capturing how small your children are right now.

(Above taken with pic program - in real life the pink colors are bright and deep!)

As a reaction to the devastating treatment of my child by a district principal I convinced my son's father to homeschool our youngest son with me over the past year. I feel it's one of the best things I've done for any of my kids, in running with how hard I fought for my daughter's testing when she was bored in Kindergarten (reading chapter books when others were learning ABCs), the first time a principal tried to label one of my kids as ADD.

We found K-12 Online, a program that gave us all the equipment, supplies, paperwork, even a teacher, with which we could work at our separate homes with our son. He matured under our nurturing lessons and we dealt with (are still dealing with) his sensitivity issues and above grade level abilities. We will try integrating him back into the school district this Fall under a different principal who personally understands any remaining issues. No doubt we as parents learned a lot, too, over this past year, and we will continue to support both kids still in school.

I would highly recommend homeschooling but ours was just one way to do so and just one of many reasons that parents make for themselves. Please read on!

Home School by Celeste Ezell

I've been homeschooling my 5 year old for a year now and attending a Classical Conversations class with her in SF one day a week. We love it so much we're starting a new CC group in San Anselmo this Fall. It's for students age 4 through 6th grade. I'm hosting an info meeting if you're interested in learning more.

Classical Conversations provides a balance of structured guidance and independent learning in homeschooling. Come learn about the classical model of education and consider joining our new Marin community this fall!

Thankful Thursday

We are so thankful that This Little Piggy is here every Thursday! Drop in times are 11a-3p for Shawna to provide you with a beautiful professional ceramic print of your baby, child, kids, adults, even sayings! "LIKE" the Facebook page (link on site) and you can get a free....

Today I am personally thankful for all those who keep me grounded. Sometimes the world of retail is not fun, no it's more than that. Sometimes a person can stir up a whole lot of nothing and fan it until it feels like something. I can make it go away if I chose to loose focus on the storm and instead pay attention to the calm and compassionate. Everything must be a lesson or we won't grow. Anything can be overcome or we won't get anywhere. But still, we have store rules and our FAQ page has been updated.

May everyone have reasons for thanks!!

Closed for the weekend

Small businesses work hard. Small businesses work long hours. Small businesses make exceptions, negotiate, assist, go above and beyond. Small businesses understand.

Sometimes small businesses need a return favor -

Please accept our gratitude for your understanding during this unavoidable closure (just two little days that mean the world to Stephanie!!!)

We will see you again on Wednesday, 6/27,
and give you 50% off.

Best wishes for a great weekend everyone!

Classic and Safe

I was a 70s kid: records, wooden blocks, Lego, free toys from gas stations, Big Wheel, etc. Fun was a cement slide and metal climbing structure or just running around the neighborhood.

Here is an interesting article from a blog which found us (we do not officially endorse the site but you are welcome to view it):

Classic stuff! What do you buy for your kids today? What were your favorite toys or things to do when you were younger?

I find myself attracted to "retro" items for memory's sake (I remember that!). Items from the 80s are not to my liking, after all I was in middle and high school and too old for things such as Cabbage Patch Dolls. My first son was born in the 90s and he was all about dinosaurs - surely, I thought, my son will grow up to be a paleontologist! He just graduated from high school and play electric bass, but I bet I could still get him to identify obscure dinosaurs.

Best sellers at our store are often in simple form: puzzles, cars, dolls, wooden toys, Lego/Duplo, Fisher Price Little People, bicycles. Thomas brand is a hit and thankfully many knock-offs (and resale stores) help with the cost of these sought after items. Rocking horses still rock. Lego is still liked. Bikes are the best.

When buying something for your child try not to be a deer in the headlights seeing NEW and IMPROVED. Think back to basics and buy classic.

P.S. We were recently visited by undercover CPSC agent and we had a 100% pass on items on the floor (nothing recalled), plus I identified safety sites and procedures in a manner that, dare I say, impressed the inspector. I love what I do! - Stephanie

What's New Wednesday

My youngest got his outfit here: Star Wars shirt and Mini Boden shorts (2nd time we've sold them) and he's holding a fun electronic dino grabber/chomper. We sell shoes similar to what he's wearing (Crocs and knock-offs).

Now he's playing with a dog that zips into its own house and snores when you "ring the doorbell". He's read a chapter book since we've been open today. What can I say, it's fun to come to work!!

We have an open top infant swing, Hobby metal balance bike, Marin MBX50 2 wheeler, Graco Snap-N-Go, Alma Papa folding mini crib, IKEA white corner computer desk with hutch, Heeley's, Hula Hoop, kids golf clubs and we have 1 pair golf shoes, Imaginarium train table, wooden toys, swimwear, jackets (since the Bay Area has mini-climates), diaper bags, crib music soothers, shoes from infant 3 to LARGE 8, sleep to jeans in sizes Preemie to LARGE 18. Call during business hours (10-5 Wed-Sun) to check stock or bring your brood in.

Come by for fun!

Happy Father's Day

This is my Dad...really! Isn't he colorful?

He's living in Canada now but will be coming down this year for a visit (yay)! Born and raised in San Francisco, he has wonderful life stories to tell. Kind of heart, always thinking, likes to press people's buttons, an actor, a tinkerer, and caring citizen, he has been a great shoulder to me over the years.

He'll say to me "but you were just born last month" whenever I have a birthday or major life event (like motherhood). I used to scoff amusingly. Today my first son, who is 18, is graduating from high school. I am now repeating my Dad - I get it!!

Whether you are a single parent, have your Dad around or not, this is a time like Mother's Day to reflect on parenthood. Sometimes there are two moms or two dads, sometimes grandparents or other family members or foster parents are the "parents". Sometimes a friend is like a Dad.

We applaud Dads and all caretakers of children and so we will be closed on Sun 6/17 to celebrate.
